Trauma is described as a deeply distressing or disturbing event. Often times, people think of trauma, their initial thoughts are of PTSD and military veterans. Trauma can also include a party involved in a car accident, a robbery victim, even learning that a spouse has cheated. We allow each individual to define their own trauma, because what affects one person negatively may not affect the next person in the same way. Experiencing a traumatic experience may result in emotional and physical symptoms that affects day to day life. These symptoms might include, shock, anger, irritability, guilt, shame, hopelessness, depression, anxiety, shortness of breath, sleeplessness, and/ or a change in appetite. Using Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), I assist clients in processing trauma, with the goal of being able to reconcile and move forward without hinderance.
Everyone has unique perception of the world and their place in it. How we view ourselves in this world influences our interpretation of experiences; thoughts, feelings and responses. Identifying with various cultures based on gender, age, ethnic background, sexual orientation or religion is an important tool for learning who we are. Mindful of these complexities, individual therapy tailored to your specific needs can be beneficial in helping navigate a multicultural and sometimes complicated world.
Have you recently made a decision to change something in your life, but aren’t exactly clear on how to go about it? Maybe you are outgrowing your friends or are considering returning to college, making a career change or soon becoming an empty nester. I can help by offering support and walking through this journey with you. Life transitions are important. They are the moments in our lives that let us know we are moving forward. Knowing this, however, does not mean life transitions are always easy. Therapy can be a helpful tool when trying to manage the conflicting feelings often associated with life transitions as they arise.
DATING & RELATIONSHIPS
One of the most meaningful aspects of a person’s life are their relationships. The ability to be in a supportive, respectful relationship with someone who can meet your needs results in a greater sense of well-being. Whether you are coping with a break-up, making the decision to enter the dating scene, you don’t have to navigate this alone. Working together, we can explore relationship patterns, improve social skills and identify needs and wants.
Supervision sessions include individual and/or group meetings averaging 4 hours a month. In these meetings, we address topics such as ethics, counseling techniques, applicable literature reviews, interventions and case staffings.
My goal is to provide support and guidance to interns, so they may emerge from their internship as confident and effective therapist with strong ethics, and an ability to work independently.
